One of the biggest reasons why Apple is first on everyone'smind is because it's ultra easy to remember the name. Other similar phones hadbeen made before but they had names that were more difficult for the generalpublic, e.g. Motorola A1000, Sony-Ericsson P990 or even the forefather IBMSimon Personal Communicator. iPhone, it's hyper easy to remember, not tomention the company name, Apple, who doesn't know the fruit? 4. Marketing is nota battle of products, it's a battle of perceptions. Much of marketing is aboutperception. If the product you are selling is perceived as good, that's fine.If the product you're selling is perceived as bad, it's no good. Starbuck'scoffee is luxurious. McDonald's coffee is cheap. This is true because it iswhat the customer perceives.

I bet if you put both side by side, in identical unlabeled canada b2c email list cups, coffee snobs wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Fiji water isanother example. Why would anyone spend more for bottled water that tastesalmost identical to other bottled waters? Because this water is perceived asone of the best. Fiji water is collected from tropical rainfall in Fiji and isnaturally filtered through volcanic rock rising into an underground aquifer. Soremember. You can have the best product in the world, but the moment the worldperceives it as disappointing, it becomes so. You have to be able to work onperception. 5. The most coveted achievement in marketing is having a word inthe prospect's mind. This is an extension of marketing rule #1. 1: It is muchbetter to be first than to be best. But a more modest approach than owning acategory is owning a word.

Lindt owns chocolate Starbucks owns coffee McDonald's ownscheeseburgers Coca Cola owns pop, cola, soda and soft drinks If your brand canown a word in your potential customer's mind, you really have a chance tobecome the king of a category. 6. Two companies cannot own the same word in theprospect's mind. While I am reorganizing the image of my company, I wasfighting for the word… “marketing”. However, I quickly realized two things…Marketing is a very competitive word (many sites and agencies were already verywell positioned) and when most people hear the word marketing, they think ofadvertising. So, I thought, who cares… I'm not going to try to own acompetitive word that most people don't know the true meaning of. So, Ipositioned my business as specializing in digital marketing to grow brands andtheir image online.
