In color science, we discover that hue, saturation and luminosity are the elements that define the richness of a stone. The most relevant factor is usually color saturation, which is normally a rarer quality in colored stone formations. Comparing gems of the same color range , such as rubies, we found that saturation makes a difference in color quality. An aquamarine with a vibrant light blue is valued more than one with a pale tone. In stones with more intense colors, such as blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, we look for a balance between saturation and luminous tone. The ideal stone displays a captivating and bright color, avoiding excessive darkness, which could detract from its visual appeal. EXAMPLE: Four blue sapphires showing a variation in saturation and luminosity. Sapphire 1 has low saturation (a very light blue color). Sapphire 2 has good saturation and is also a very bright blue. Sapphire 3 has good saturation in some areas, but its overall tone is dark, and therefore less luminous.

Stone 4 has such a dark tone that its color is barely noticeable, it is almost black. We know that color tones are subjective preferences, but stone 2 would be considered the best quality. CLARITY: HOW IS THE BRILLIANCE OF A STONE PERCEIVED? Clarity is related to the number of inclusions the stone has. They are WhatsApp Number List structures of small imperfections that are formed during the process of creating them. An "eye-clean" gem has optimal clarity, where inclusions are practically invisible. However, in gems like emeralds, inclusions are more frequent than in other types of stones, which therefore makes them more accepted. This is why an emerald with very good clarity (or with very few inclusions) becomes much more valuable, because it is also a rarer material to find in nature.

The cut, rather than the shape, encompasses the quality of the carving, symmetry and polishing. A well-cut gem not only highlights its color and clarity, but also plays with light in a charming way. This aspect, the most subjective, is crucial for the brilliance, which gives life to the gem. Cut, as well as clarity, is directly related to the brilliance we perceive of a stone. For some, brilliance refers to the amount of “life” a gem has. Does it glow when you swing it? Does the light dance on the gem? A well-cut gem allows most of the light that enters the stone to be returned to the observer and display the color. The quality of the cut refers to how well the gem is stoned or how well the various facets are set. SIZE: BEYOND DIMENSIONS Although size does not dictate quality, it does influence its value in the market. As a stone grows in size, its rarity increases exponentially, resulting in a higher price per carat. Some gems, such as quartz and topaz, can reach considerable sizes, while others rarely exceed a few carats.
